A Quick Catch Up

Life here in my little corner of Texas is rolling right along. Homeschooling, church, bible study, book club, and our homeschool co-op are all taking up a good bit of my time.

This is the time of year we start planning our homeschool classes at co-op for next school year which means meetings, changes, answering emails, making decisions, taking surveys, analyzing feedback and doing a lot of talking. It can be both mentally and physically exhausting, but it is very gratifying work.

Other than THAT, I've been making quite a few of these . . .

Dipping and coating strawberries in chocolate is not a bad way to spend the the morning.  If you get done soon enough these are very tasty with a cup of coffee.

These chocolate covered strawberries are my latest addiction. I have made them FIVE times in the past few weeks. Help! Please hide the chocolate from me.

Books I've finished reading lately, all of which are very good.

I've also been reading a little bit. Tomorrow I am meeting with my book clubbies to discuss Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking.  Have I mentioned it before?  This book has been a good conversation starter with family and friends alike and I've enjoyed what the book says about extroverts as much as all the info on introverts.  I enjoy figuring out the people in my life better and this has been a good tool.

I really enjoyed The Prodigal God.  It challenged my thinking on the story usually known as The Prodigal Son. I've listened to a good number of Tim Keller's sermons so the information was not new, but I like having it compiled and written down.  I am very visual and love to let my eyes roll over the words.

And Shanghai Girls was really good story including a complicated sibling/sister relationship, arranged marriages, struggle to survive, and heartbreak, but very educational about a time, place and culture in American history that I don't know a whole lot about. Do you know what a paper son was?

I hope you will say hello! Are you reading anything good? Or enjoying some tasty treat lately?  Do tell.

  1. I just finished a good novel called Me Before You by JoJo Mowry. I laughed, I cried, I was surprised by the ending. Now I'm reading Penelope Lively's How It All Began. Both books are set in England--oh, how I love the UK!

  3. Strawberries and chocolate together - yum, a perfect combination.
I'm reading Far from the Madding Crowd at the moment but since I don't now have my lunch hour at work to read, it's going much slower. Your book "Quiet...." looks intriguing. Most people would describe me as an introvert so I'd be interested in reading a bit about it.

  4. Some fancy place we stayed at in the past served chocolate-dipped strawberries that looked like little tuxedos. Have you seen those? So cute!

I'm reading Pilgrim Inn by Elizabeth Goudge and The Gold Bug by Edgar Allen Poe. Also The Virgin Diet.

I hope you review the Introvert book as I'm one and would like to know what it says.

  6. Hello Leslie!

I read most of this post yesterday, then I was interrupted (imagine that!), I just got back to the book reviews.

The strawberries had my mouth watering!

You appear to also work in leadership positions in your homeschool coops. I tutor a Classical Conversations class, but I do not want to lead adults at the present. Maybe it has something to do about meetings. You seem very good at what you do.

Interesting about the book titled Quiet. That one certainly intriques me since I consider myself an introvert and crave quiet. Do you purchase all your books or do you get them from the library?

Oh, I do want to mention too how I love the way you did your blog title and simple joys.

  7. So are all your blog readers introverts? Because "Quiet" also captured my attention! I'll have to see if our library has a copy.

In my "spare" time, I'm reading "The Poker Bride", a fascinating history and biography of a Chinese immigrant just after the gold rush in California.
