In Which I SEE Squeak Lay An Egg

Bubba and Squeak (that is Squeaks on the right)

For those of you with chickens and other fowl I know this is no big deal, but this morning, after living here almost two years and being a suburban girl through and through (that is different from being a city girl), I finally saw a duck lay an egg.  I mean I SAW it.  With my eyes.  You know what I mean?

And here it is resting prettily in a wood shaving nest under a crape myrtle right next to the sidewalk and street.

While I was out there I snapped this picture, too.

We have had several cormorants show up to spend the day at the pond fishing and drying their wings in the wind the past couple of weeks.  They have a funny beak that is always stuck up in the air in a snooty sort of way.

I hope you are spotting some wonderful and maybe even new-to-you nature today!

  2. That is a most exciting thing! And I'm not being sarcastic.

I keep meaning to tell you that I love you new header painting of young woman reading in bed. Who painted it?

  7. *haha* That is so cool! Sometimes I interrupt my girls in the process of laying one, so I politely wait a few minutes then go back. :) There is nothing better in my book than picking up a warm egg that has just been laid!

  8. Even though I have had chickens for some 25 years, I still look forward to gathering the eggs and counting them as I put them into the bucket. To see a wild bird egg laid is even more thrilling to me. Hooray for you! Now you must keep count of them and report to us. Please?

  9. After being overseas for several years, I'm just enjoying the cycle of seasons and all the things that are blooming. Surrounded by sunny daffodils right now...

You would like Florida in the winter.

  12. Oh, that's really fun to see a duck lay an egg!

Funny, in our family we call cormorants not "snobby," but "clueless." To us, it's like they're not watching where they're going or where the fish are and they might run into something. I'm sure there's some good reason for this expression, but I'm not sure what it is!

  14. Hooray for Squeek! I hope you get to watch the egg hatch too. How fun would that be! Even though we have snow (again), the robins, redwings, and killdeer are back. I haven't heard the killdeer yet, but my two oldest who have been working at some greenhouses during March break this week say they hear them all over the place there. I'll take their word for it and continue to hope that spring will be here soon!

    Blessings!
